Baldwin makes case

"I think I've shown that my shoulder is just as good as it was before I had surgery, and that I can still pitch," said Baldwin, who had the operation after the 2000 season.

"Can I play the piano anymore?"
"Of course you can!"
"Well, I couldn't before!" comments

In search of a bathroom

Can I make a brief plea to Mets GM Jim Duquette? DON'T ACCEPT CHARACTER VOUCHERS FROM THE YANKEES! This is like letting known terrorists into the country if they have a letter of introduction from al Queda.

Ok, that was unfair. This is much, much worse. This is not only doing that, but then trying to reassure fans with this information, and more or less blaming the Yankees for allowing the Mets to make such a blunder.

Can you see, ever, under any circumstances, the roles reversed? Ridiculous. comments

Mets 4, Cardinals 2

1. I love Jason Phillips.

2. I interviewed John Sickels today, and the name Prentice Redman is officially a laugh line. What is sad is that the best way to identify Craig Brazell is "A poor man's Prentice Redman."

3. Nice outings for every pitcher- there appear to be enough pitchers that we won't need to see Jeremy Griffiths in the majors. I know his minor league numbers are decent. But I'd like him to show my something, ANYTHING, that would lead me to the belief he can pitch at this level before I look to him as a candidate for the rotation. I sure hope Tyler Yates is healthy.

4. So excited for baseball, but I'll be even more juiced when Matsui and Piazza play.

5. Jesse Levis is in camp! The third best Jewish catcher of his generation!

6. I'm reasonably sure I'm the fourth best. And I was a pitcher.

Who else is in the Soriano market? The traditional spenders seem mostly out. Yankees of course. With OBP inclined GMs, I can't imagine LA or Boston having interest. Baltimore? Well, yeah I suppose that's possible, but it seems unlikely after the boatload they've already put down this offseason. Seattle should by a big spender, but they're really not. There are others who shell out some cash, but St. Louis needs arms, not bats, Arizona is an inch from restarting, etc., etc.. I don't see any of these second tier spenders trading for Soriano and then paying him 9+ for a long(ish) term contract.

You know who should get involved if they've got the minor league juice? Detroit. Aparently the IRod signing has spurred tremendous ticket sales, and a gaudy Yankee-honed name like Soriano sure wouldn't hurt. Also, their team is mostly made up of minimum wage Bard dropouts, so they ought to consider making the smart investment here. Also, though I think Soriano woefully overrated, it's not a bad place for him. His power could withstand the stadium, and he'll hit 40 doubles and 10 tripples in that place - with a .330 OBP despite.

As or the Mets' involvment, I'm not opposed. Like Howard has said, Soriano could end up being a slightly better Juan Samuel, or Sammy Sosa - and for a few 2nd tier prospects, he's certainly worth the gamble (why not? It ain't my fucking money). But who are they bidding against where they'd consider moving ANY of their top three (or Huber, or Milledge for that matter)? Really, they're only bidding against Texas, who can't afford to lose Soriano to FA; unless they find a taker, they'll have to resign him for big money, when all they talk about is cutting payroll.

If the Mets get Soriano on the cheap, great, but if they aren't willing to meet Texas' demands, well I don't think it's a terrible loss.

It's a can't lose situation for the Mets, unless they act like the Mets. comments

Klapisch on Soriano

It seems like Klapisch is preparing to hit the Mets hard if they either trade for or don't trade for Soriano. Good old Klapisch- I wonder what the Mets did to him? comments

Howard tells me that Erickson has added a splitter. I think it's pretty clear that the Mets are ready to rumble. comments

Familiar faces to return?

Well, they're going after a fifth starter and a platoon partner for Garcia- I can't help but wonder if these guys are the best alternatives. Reed's 2003 ERA was awful (5.07), but his BB/K rate was pretty much in line with his career norms, so it certainly could have been an aberration. Or, h'es 38 and finished. Given the Mets luck, obviously bet on the latter.
Spencer averaged .277/.349/.435 vs. lefties over the past three years, with 12 homeruns in 305 at bats (average). A platoon between he and Garcia should net roughly .270/.330/.450 with 25-35 home runs. This is adequate production, essentially what the Mets were hoping/assuming from Burnitz, but at rioughly 1/6 the cost. Of course, Burnitz was a solid fielder, as is Garcia... not sure about Spencer.
Is Reed better than Grant Roberts/Aaron Heilman? I hope this team is smart enough to bring Reed in, and use him as a long man if it turns out that either of those two are ready.
As for Spencer, I suppose he's the best alternnative out there, though a better planned organization would have grabbed Gabe Kapler (huge numbers vs. lefties). Then again, a better planned organization did (the Red Sox). comments
